Nicholas Calcina Howson, Pao Li Tsiang Professor of Law, University of Michigan Law School, and former partner, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP

 

A wide-ranging conversation with Professor Nicholas Howson, a specialist in Chinese law and legal institutions who has resided in Beijing and Shanghai for many years as a practicing lawyer and scholar. Counsel to the lead underwriter on China's first SEC-registered IPO on the NYSE, and later to the Soros Funds on the first foreign investment in a PRC joint stock company and that firm's subsequent A and B share IPOs, he has recently served as the only non-Chinese specialist on the ADB's expert group advising the PRC legislature on wholesale reworking of the PRC Securities Law. He will cover: China's economic reform of the past 40 years and the development of both firms and capital markets on the Chinese mainland; access for foreign funds and investors to the PRC domestic ("A share") (public) capital markets; regulatory and political legal developments after the stock market crashes of 2015-16 (including the import of the PRC Securities Law 2020); and how foreign exchange controls on both the capital and current accounts affect foreign public investment and direct private investment and investment value realization.

Professor Vikramaditya Khanna will provide: cultural and historical insights into India; thoughts on recent developments (changes in Kashmir, protests, secularism debates); a discussion of investment routes and other investment issues; and information on how repatriation issues differ from China.
